The 5 tai chi principles underlie effective tai chi practice.  Other schools and other teachers may emphasise different principles.

1. Calming the mind:
Focusing the mind to avoiding distraction.

2. Relaxing the body:
Relaxing to the point where there is no unnecessary tension in the body.

3. Lifting the spirit:
Being “in the zone”.

4. Aligning the posture:
Achieving the proper body alignment for effective practice.

5. Settling the breathing:
Controlled diaphragmatic breathing coordinated with movement.
